Helpful Information
Credit cards are only accepted in some banks in Bamako and not in the rest of the country.
These are items that we usually take for granted in our home areas, but which are not always easily obtainable in Mali, and will help make your trip more comfortable:
- Mali is often quite dusty and you will find it helpful to bring along some eyedrops, nasal wash and tissues.
- You will need to bring your own towels as some encampements don't furnish them.
- Bathroom tissue is a must as well as moist wipes, hand sanitiser and soap.
Some of the places you will stay are rustic and will only provide THIN foam mattresses, no sheets, blankets or pillows, so you will find it very helpful to brinmg these items ( night can be cold ):
- Inflatable mattresses will be a luxury if you can bring them with you.
- You will need confortable walking shoes.
- If you like an evening cocktail, bring along a bottle or 2 of your favories, as alchohol (except for beer) is not easily obtainable in Mali
- Chewable Pepto Bismol tablets, taken several times a day will help prevent stomach upsets.immodium and cipro are also good to have just in case.
- You will probably need to bring fewer clothes than you might think, as you can have them washed at most of the encampements.
- Some small LED flashlights are very handy when you are in the encampments and on the pinasse.
